A great volcanic Costa Rica Honeymoon
Costa Rica like the rest of its neighboring countries in Central America is known for their beautiful people (judging from the number of winning beauty queens from the region), pristine white sandy beaches, rainforest and last but not least, the awesome volcanoes.
The volcanoes have been in existence since the dawn of time and scientists have estimated that their age is close to 65 million years old. Currently the volcanoes do not pose any present danger to the country as most of them are considered to be dead or inactive volcanoes. However there are 5 of them that are still in the active mode but other than the occasional spewing of hot larvae and gas, they are not endangering the people in the surrounding areas unless you go too close to the top of the volcanoes. The volcanic eruptions over the years have increased the fertility of the land. As a result, plants and vegetation grow rapidly in the area which in turn provide food to the thriving wildlife in the region. You can plan the visit to the volcanoes either in the beginning or the end of your Costa Rica honeymoon depending on whether you want your honeymoon to have a great start or end it with a bang!
The volcanic ranges in Costa Rica consist of 3, they are Talamanca, Guanacaste and the central range. The central range is made up Barva, Irazu, Turraialba and Poas volcano. Guanacaste is where the popular Arenal Volcano is located as well as Orosi, Tenatio and Ricon volcano. El Viejo is the only volcano found in Talamanca. The 5 active volcanoes are Irazu, Ricon Poas, Orosi and last but not least Arenal. You haven’t been to Costa Rica if you didn’t visit the domineering Arenal Volcano is how most tourist and locals put it. The volcano is both majestic and fearsome especially at night where hot larvae, gas and hot stones can be seen shooting up hundreds of feet in the air on quite frequently.
Apart from the volcano, you can also visit Arenal National Park where you can find the largest artificial lake in the Costa Rica. The lake is filled with fresh water fish such as rainbow bass so it’s favorite place among fishing enthusiasts. If you would like to spend more time touring the area, I suggest that you stay overnight at one of several hotels and resorts in the area. The more sought after hotels are like Arenal Nayara, Kioro hotel and Spring resort.
The other volcano that you shouldn’t miss is the Poas. Located in the central volcanic range, Poas volcano house some of the most unique and largest volcanic craters in the world. The largest crater in the area measures up to 1.6 meters in diameter and it’s close to 900 meters deep. The inactive craters is filled with icy cold water however the active one is still spewing out hot gases which also turn the water in the crater into one of most acidic in the world. Surrounding the Poas volcano is a national park of the same name. Here you can explore the unique forestation as well as the abundance of rare species of wildlife such as bird, wolves and other types of mammals.
