Take Advantage of Direct Travel Insurance

Every year, millions of people travel the world without direct travel insurance. Every year, millions of travelers
meet accidents and encounter incidents to which they are ill prepared to deal with in terms of financial costs. And
every year, more and more people are realizing the importance of taking out travel insurance before going out of the
country for whatever business and leisure purpose they have in mind.

Importance of Travel Insurance

The importance of travel insurance cannot be overemphasized. In this world where dangers abound both here and abroad, you have to protect yourself and your family from the anguish of shouldering the hefty financial costs when you become involved in an accident.

On one hand, your hospitalization bills in another country can run in the thousands of dollars, which will not include your airplane ride back home. Your travel insurance company can shoulder all or part of your medical and transportation costs. That is, if you have taken the time to avail of direct travel insurance.

On the other hand, you may also be required to pay for the medical costs of somebody or pay for the physical damages done on something in the course of your accident. And did we mention that you might even be demanded to compensate somebody for lost income? Yes, traveling has its rewards but it has its risks, too, of which travel insurance can help you cover in more ways than one.

Getting Started on Travel Insurance

Before taking out travel insurance, you have to do your research. First, check your existing insurance policies to determine the coverage these may have on your travel. For example, your house insurance may cover lost/stolen luggage while your credit card company may offer limited travel insurance for member of good standing. You can then choose the direct travel insurance to fill in the gaps.

Second, determine the category of traveler that you fall into so as to secure maximum coverage at a reasonable cost.
There are four basic types of travel insurance: short-term/single trips for up to 90 days, long-term/multi-trip for
up to a year, expatriate travel and foreign nationals. Talk with your insurance provider in this regard.

Third, assess your needs in terms of the length of your trip, your destination, your planned activities and your
general health. Keep in mind that insurance companies will have exclusions on certain destinations and activities
like hazardous sports. Other exclusions will include pregnancy and prior medical conditions, suicide and self-
inflicted injury, claims related to war and mental illness.
